What Is Trailer and Container Tracking?
Trailer and container tracking uses self-powered trackers, communications networks and software to report the location, movement and dwell of assets that may not have a permanent electrical supply. It can provide depot, yard, customer-site and journey visibility without relying on the tractor unit or towing vehicle.
A well-designed system should help teams answer practical questions: Where is the asset? When did it arrive? Has it moved? How long has it been idle? Is it at an authorised location? Which assets appear available for the next job?
This is asset visibility, not automatically a replacement for live vehicle telematics. The right reporting pattern depends on how quickly the business needs to know that an asset has moved or arrived.

Location and movement data do not automatically prove whether a trailer is loaded, empty, coupled, roadworthy or productively utilised. Those conclusions may require workflow status, load data, sensors, driver input or integration with a TMS, yard system or maintenance platform.

Reporting Frequency Has an Operational and Battery Cost
An autonomous tracker has a finite energy budget. More frequent GPS fixes, repeated communications attempts, poor signal conditions, extreme temperatures and sensor activity can all reduce battery life. A configuration intended to identify depot arrival and prolonged dwell may last far longer than one designed to transmit throughout every journey.

Define the required response time for each event. A buyer may need to know immediately that a high-value trailer has left an authorised yard, but only need a daily confirmation that a long-dwell container remains at a customer site. Different reporting rules can coexist within one deployment.
